Man About Town

'Giant cloud bird lays sun dog egg'. That potential headline is no worse than the guff that used to appear in the 'Man About Town' column in my local newspaper. I was acquainted with the reporter who wrote a filler column under that title, usually at the last minute in his favorite coffee shop—Douglas Adams said, ''I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by"—containing veiled accusations and woolly innuendos about unidentifiable persons. The phrase 'plausible deniabilty' might have been coined for this fellow, except nobody ever took anything in the column seriously. The one time the reporter actually did have revelations worth reading was also the time that the sub-editor removed the story to makes room for something else such as the cricket scores. So my hour cruising the town with my driver is dedicated to that particularly egregious piece of journalism.

These two horses were gossiping over a gate but fell silent as we approached—presumably they were talking horse sense

There is a rocket test track atop that mesa and sharp eyes will spot the whitewashed 'L' done by local students

Always good for a childish giggle, this is Molly's Nipple. When asked what women did with their nipples (correct answer: feed babies) my six years old grandson replied, "They shave them!" Attempts to discover where this might have come from and what it might mean were implicitly rebuffed by gales of laughter. Other children seemed to be sharing in the joke, but no explanation was ever made.

The small cloud formed, glowed, and then disappeared; all in a couple of minutes with the setting sun away to the left

The complete sunset event took thirty five minutes
