JBCW Does Birmingham, England, have more canals than Venice, Italy ?

Canals

Sort of, but it's a misleading fact. The headline picture is a matrix of six images from a gallery at CanalVoyagers.com, taken at various locations around the canal system in the UK. The 'More Canals Than Venice' is an eye catching way to promote tourism to the UK Second City, but in the same way that there are weasel words this is a weasel fact. Peggy Melmoth, at CanalVoyagers.com again, gives  a narrow boat enthusiast perspective, and the factoid is thoroughly debunked at the Birmingham-Alive.com website.

How Venice compares with Birmingham as a destination for walking holidays would make an interesting research project: please let us know your results. You might consider starting with a Julia Bradbury TV show, 'Canal Walks'. There are four episodes in the series; the second episode covered the Worcester and Birmingham Canal; that is its correct name, but Bradbury started in Birmingham, so don't get confused. Andy, from DiscoverWithAndy.com, gives five reasons he will never again visit Venice: number one reason, as Andy poetically phrases his complaint, is that the city "stinks like a thru-hiker with dysentery coming off the Appalachian Trail." Why would anyone need another four reasons? Bradbury, in complete contrast, reports an enticing smell of chocolate wafting on the breeze. Take that, Venice!
